Three Decades of an Icon: The VW Beetle Takes Over Salt River

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when a classic car is brought back to life. It’s not just about the nuts and bolts; it’s about preserving a piece of history. This month, our boutique Salt River Showroom is playing host to a very special exhibition: “3 Decades of the Beetle.”

The 1957 “Oval” – The Golden Era of Curves

Before the “Big Window” took over in late ’57, the Beetle was defined by its iconic Oval rear window. This 1957 model is a purist’s dream. It sits right at the peak of the 1950s aesthetic, featuring the “W” shaped decklid and the classic “swimming trophy” Wolfsburg crest on the bonnet.

  • The Vibe: Pure vintage elegance.

  • Restoration Highlight: Correct 36hp air-cooled heart and that unmistakable period-correct interior that takes you straight back to the 50s.

These three beautifully restored examples, straight from our dedicated Johannesburg workshop, represent the evolution of the “People’s Car” through its most defining eras.

The 1967 “One Year Only” – The Holy Grail

Ask any VW enthusiast, and they’ll tell you: 1967 changed everything. Often called the “One Year Only” model, it was a transitional masterpiece. It was the first year of the 12-volt system and the 1500cc engine, yet it retained much of the classic “old school” charm.

  • Why it’s Rare: The ’67 was unique for its specific combination of one year only features and parts. It’s a sophisticated bridge between the vintage 50s and the modern 70s.

The 1972 “Sporty” 1600 – The Local Legend

By the 70s, the Beetle was finding its “cool.” Our 1972 restoration is a tribute to the era of the Super Bug and the sporty variants that South Africans fell in love with. With its more powerful 1600cc twin-port engine, this was the Beetle that could actually keep up with modern traffic.

  • The Look: Think Rostyle wheels, sporty exhaust note, a more aggressive stance, and that “take on the world” attitude that paved the way for the legendary SP1600.

From Joburg with Love

Every car in this collection underwent a “ground-up” restoration at our Johannesburg workshop. Our team spent countless hours sourcing period-correct parts and bringing these bugs back to life. Seeing them lined up in Salt River is a testament to the craftsmanship and passion our workshop team pours into every project.

Come down to Salt River to see them in the metal. Whether you’re a lifelong “Volla” fan or just appreciate fine restoration, these three beauties are not to be missed.
